Elsa or Erza ?
« on: April 03, 2007, 05:16:21 AM »
Well i've been wondering  after someone pointed out to me today that Erza's name is spelled as Elsa in  ( a chapter 22,p4 upper right panel)  will you guys keep on using Erza or will you ever change to the less cool but "correct" version?

(yes, i've got nothing better to think about)

Mashima first spelled it as "Erza". (when Mirajane writes her name with the magic pen)
So it's anyone's guess which is the correct spelling since even the mangaka can't be consistent.

Ok. I'll just assume Kana or what's her name  is illiterate then (since alcho does destroy braincells and Mirajane is so much cuter than her   ;D )

Eh... No matter what the spelling is, they'll pronounce it as eh-ru-za... Ru as in... in mixture of ru/lu.

I was introduced to "Erza" first (though I pronouce it "Err-zah"), so I go with that.

"Elsa" ("L-sah"?) sounds a bit too delicate and feminine, something that doesn't fit The Titania at all, y'know?

If there's ever a Fairy Tail anime, I'm going to wince everytime someone says her name; Eh-ru-za, eh? Ick, I don't like that at all!

i think you think the name's gonna be pronounced "eh-RU-za". I like thinking it'll go like "eru-za" with the ru being softer and almost not pronouncing the u like when i hear "daisuki" ~> "dai-ski" :)
goin' back to the old-school.

Hrmm... Just imagine "L" from Death Note anime. And add "za" onto it.

Erza sounds a bit ruder and more fitting for her personality.

Other than that, Elsa is a common italian female name and, more interesting, the italian word for hilt, which is rather appropriate for her being an armor/sword mage. But dunno is Mashima sensei go that far for her name.

Well the author of this manga spelled it Erza because first of all... hes japanese =P

Erza and Elza is like the same thing because in japanese, you cant make "r" sounds, like remember, if you tell a japanese person to say remember, they will say limemba cause japanese have trouble pronouncing the R, and more used to the li

I remember Mashima misspelling a lot in RAVE, too, so I'm not surprised. Heck, he even misspelled something within one chapter -__-; (Onibus vs Onibas, I think)

I was going to check when tanko comes out to see if Mashima fixed it or not, but since my Kino doesn't carry v2 and 3 yet (or maybe I just overlooked them), I wasn't able to. Yet. Hopefully soon.

Rave was my favorite manga. I assume you have read all 35 volumes?

yeah me too, although i dont feel the "Elsa" sounds wrong... my guess is that if (when) this series gets lisenced they will translate it as such
