As most of you know, this is one of the longest manga series that is still running. 150 volumes of Tanko are released so far, and still going on :] Jump doesn't even track its chapter numbers... It's mostly about Japanese culture with much of otaku flavor.

Last week (2006-32), it talked about trains. Some train maniacs are crazy and Ryo-san (the main character) explained various kind of train maniacs such as those who like to make plastic models, those who loves to take train pictures, and those who loves to ride on every single train lines in Japan.

It's scary, but it's also amazing that the author can write about any kind of otaku cultures for so many years!

[2006-33]

It talks about light rail (tram) in Tokyo this week. 3 boys decided to ride all 41 lines of light rail in Tokyo back in 1965 as their summer vacation research. (Note, light rail in Tokyo was discontinued around 1970s. Since riding all 41 lines of light rail would cost too much for 3 elementary kids, they decided to ride it on Tokyo citizen's day (Oct 1), but realizes that the summer vacation would be far gone by then. They negotiated with teacher, and for the teacher being train maniac, he gave the boys the extention.

When they were planning for it, they realized that it is hard for them to finish riding it all in one day. BUT there was one transfer student from Osaka that is really crazy about trains. With his help, they made a time table to ride all 41 lines in one day. It was then when one of the boys got a news that the light rail in Tokyo would be discontinued soon.

I love KochiKame.  x_x;  The anime was funny as hell with Rasal Ishii doing the voice of Ryou-san. . . And Kobuhei-chan was doing the other tubby cop. . . x_x  I forget that comedian's name. . . but they were really good as seiyuus.  XD  It's like Eyeshield 21 with Hiruma's voice done by London Boots.  XD  Comedians make good seiyuus.  haha

[2006-34]

Continuous from last week...

Because of the sad news of light rail is being discontinued, the teacher said he'll join 4 boys in riding all 41 lines using free pass. One of the boys got angry since teacher is an adult and thus he should be able to pay the normal fee to ride the light rail, otherwise light rail will be more in debt.

Near the light rail railroad, there are many people sleeping. That's because the line is near Kabuki-cho, where people gather to get drunk. Some line goes in the middle of Tokyo, so one of the boys experiences the traffic. The other boy is touched to see trolley bus next to light rail. The other boy's line goes all the way to country side and he doesn't know where he is any more.

In the end of the day, they found out they couldn't ride one of the lines. Adults negotiated the line's manager and they were allowed to ride on it. They experience the speed of light rail, and realizes it was only slow because there are cars and light rail was just being cautious.

The time shifts to the current, and one of the boys and his coworkers revived the old light rail train. He also plan to revive other trains, too. :]

[2006-35]

O_O!?!?


That was my first expression of seeing this chapter. Page 1, to be exact. I thought I downloaded some other series, lol.

This week, Kochi Kame talks about numbers. People are using too many numbers. Right when you are born, you are given your birthday. Then you were measured for height and weight. When you start to attend a school, you'll have attendance days, test scores, athletic festival scores. It'll continue on job hunting process, time to get to work, marriage, etc, etc.

Ryotsu then proposes to use "analog" instead of "digital." Throw away the clock. When you want to see someone later, say "See you soon!"  You will wonder how soon is "soon," so that'd help your brain to work. If you want to see someone in a little bit longer later, say "See you next time!" Say "See you sometime!" if it's even longer.

People can be classified as children, yound adults, adults, and elders. That's enough. When there was an accident, instead of saying "7:30am this morning, there was a car accident at 2 Kameari and 3 people were injured," say "Eeeh, we had a car accident somewhere in Tokyo today." That's enough.

Look at Edo period. They weren't tied to the time. When sun rises, get to work. When sun sets, go home! How simple.

When they got hungry, Ryotsu said money is also digit. Just pay whatever you feel like. Ryotsu underpaid, but when it was Nakagawa's turn to pay, he overpaid for his lunch (about 1 grand usd). Reiko paid even more. Since Ryotsu is really crazy about money, he gets upset, and Nakagawa/Reiko points out that he is the one who cares most about the numbers.

When it comes to the pay day, police chief decided to pay by items (since Ryotsu said "digit is not important"), and Ryotsu was given either trading card or a top. Nakagawa and Reiko worked hard, so they were given choice of a trip to go around the world or expensive cars.

All in end, Ryotsu realized the importance of "numbers," and asked for money.

Amano Akira's comment: I used to collect ChoroQ when I was in elementary school but, when there were the same bicycles and bikes from "KochiKame" (there were ChoroQ's of those too) and each time I saw one in front of the police station or when it was in action there, I remember was so happy that I compared it so many times!  Akimoto-sensei, I admire you greatly ever since then and how you reflect the time period and power up "KochiKame"!  Congratulations on your 30th anniversary!!

Ed- Yeah.

Ryo-san- Since you're an alchemist, you can make gold?
Ed- I can make it.
Ed- Alchemy is basically "Changing metal into a complete piece of gold and by using the same method onto people, you can link it t curing diseases and it's a key to immortality" so people thought and studied it.

Ryo-san- So you can make it, right?
Ed- It's against the law.
Ed- And the real reason for doing alchemy isn't all about making gold and it's all about discovering hoe humans and the world was created and going up the path of evolution. . . basically it's a study where spirits turn into souls and

Ryo-san- Wow, alchemy can make gold too.  I want to see gold.  It's my 30th anniversay.
Ed- Like I said, it's against the law.
Ed- It has nothing to do with your 30th anniversary.  More like, listen to me damnit.

Arakawa Hiromu's comment: Congratulations for your 30th anniversary!  When I noticed it, in weekly shounen JUMP, Ryo-san was always there.  And whenever I open JUMP, Ryo-san will always be there. . . The same time it makes me feel relaxed, I admire the vitality of Akimoto-sensei who can continue such a funny series for 30 years.

Oh!Great's comment: Congratulations!!  When I noticed it, I was a reader of JUMP, but by that time, "KochiKame" was already considered a long running work.  Even if I've become a pro myself, I'm still astonished at the strength of your work still.  Terrifying...

Oda Eiichirou's comment: When you're running a series in JUMP, there's a celebration for every 50 chapters you do and you get a trophy.  When I attended the celebration for passing 50 chapters for the first time, "Kochikame" passed its 1150 chapters.  I rubbed my eyes and looked at it again and "Kochikame" was 1150 chapters.  Run!  In this party hall, there's an alien here!!  That's the time I noticed how impressive "Kochikame" was as an author.  This time, 30th year of serialization!!  As a reader, I'm happy.  And as a fellow creator, with my admirance and pride, I congratuate you.

Kubo Tite's comment: When I first read "KochiKame" back in elementary, I didn't think I would be invited for the 30th year celebration book.  Probably I don't understand how great it is to be able to draw this page.  When I notice it, it will probably be 10 or 20 years later.  At that time, I would like to read this book side by side with "KochiKame" that'll still be running then.  Congratulations on your 30th year!!
