Painting wood paneling is not a complicated project. It’s pretty easy to do even if you are not an expert in it. If your old wood paneling color is getting fade, it’s time to repaint it with some coats of paint to freshen the room. You can get a new look in your wood-paneled walls.
The first thing you need to do is clearing the room of any furniture and covering the floor with a drop cloth. Don’t forget to equip yourself with face mask and safety goggles to filter out some of the paint fumes and prevent dust and other residue from getting into your eyes during the sanding process.
The character of wood paneling is there is uneven space, so you need to smooth it out with joint compound using putty knife. Prepare the walls for painting by sanding. The best implement to use is a random orbital sander.
The proper sanding will help to remove any protective coating on the paneling that could interfere with the adherence of the paint and increase adhesion and the smoothness of the final surface. Wash the wood-paneled walls to remove any dust or residue with a solution of TSP and water.
Apply joint compound to any grooves in the paneling to create a smooth surface for the painting. Smooth the compound with the trowel and allow it to dry. After the wood paneling is prepared, you can apply one or two coats of primer paint to provide a clean and light palette for the paneled walls and let it dry.
After allowing the primer to dry, sand it down briefly with fine-grit sandpaper. Now you can start the process of painting wood paneling by using a brush to cut in around windows, doors and the ceiling.
Finish by applying your chosen paint. Two or three coats will normally be sufficient to create the look you want. Now you can stand back to admire the difference painted wood paneling in your room. Make fresh nuance in a room by painting wood paneling.
