How to remove carpet is an easy task although in the process needs extra energy to roll up the carpet that can be very heavy, bulky and difficult to move. It can be completed in just over an hour, depend on the size of the room. But it is important to note that removing an old carpet is will usually have lots of dust, dirt and sand.
If there's no need to save the carpet it is easier to cut the carpet into smaller sections with a utility knife and move the sections out one at a time.
There are some reasons why the old carpet needs to be removed. If it is just to get the carper out of the way, you can protect your hands with heavy gloves and use a sharp utility knife to cut a border around the entire area.
Sometimes, you need to protect yourself with eye goggles and a breathing respirator or quality air mask if the condition of the old carpet suffered any water damage or pet stain, or it has mold and mildew underneath.
You will also need to wear heavy duty work gloves when removing the tack strip to avoid getting stuck by the sharp tacks and nails on the strips. Don’t forget to equip yourself with the tools you need on how to remove carpet.
If your carpet is installed with tackles strips, remove shoe moldings or other edgings and cut the carpet into manageable strips with a utility knife. Pry up on the carpet corner, and pull it free from the strip along both walls. If your carpet is installed with carpet tacks, simply slide a flat-pry bar under one edge of the carpet and pry up several tacks. Proceed until all tacks are removed.
If you want to keep the carpet in one piece, release one corner and work your way along the carpet section. Once you have the length in a tight roll, wrap masking tape around it a few times to keep the roll from unraveling. Take the carpet roll out of the room.
